Larry Smith is a veteran broadcast journalist who anchors Good Morning Washington weekday mornings on ABC7/WJLA-TV and News Channel 8. He comes to Washington after more than 20 years as a sports anchor for CNN and Turner Sports.

Larry began his career in radio at WLBH-AM & FM and later WMCI-FM in his hometown of Mattoon, Illinois. He later worked as a news and sports reporter in Champaign, Illinois, Knoxville, Tennessee, and West Palm Beach, Florida before joining the CNN Sports team as an anchor in 1993.

Larry has covered more than 60 major championships worldwide, including a dozen Final Fours, six Super Bowls, Masters, BCS title games, Olympics, World Series, and more. He covered numerous breaking news stories including the Michael Vick trial, Roger Clemens’ appearance on Capitol Hill, and Dale Earnhardt’s death at Daytona.

Larry worked as weekend and morning news anchor at WCPO-TV in Cincinnati and most recently served as Sports Director and weekend news anchor for WGCL-TV in Atlanta. He has appeared on NBA TV’s “Gametime” and hosted numerous Turner Sports programs throughout the past two decades.

An avid golfer, Larry hosted a celebrity golf tournament in his hometown to raise money for scholarships for deserving high school graduates. He is a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient at Lake Land College and Eastern Illinois University.
